Welcome to Mrs. Greene’s Social Studies/History page for Team Greene and Team Rolen.

Here is what has been happening in class:

On January 29th, a special program sponsored by TVA was given to all students in Washington-Lee. I could tell that you all heard some words from our Economics Unit in their production because several of you tried to get my attention when you heard “resources”, “renewable energy” “basic needs” and other words we had been studying in our Economics Unit. How neat that we got to see “The Energy Guys” perform about the very things we had been studying in third grade!

On January 30th, we had a guest speaker from the Wytheville Museam visit both classrooms. She did a program entitled “Victorian Valentines”. We learned different theories about how Valentine’s Day began. We talked about the differences in dress, architecture, culture and money in the Victorian Times. We made valentines with Victorian elements and reviewed our poetry skills. We learned how to construct a new type of poem called a “cinquain”. Thank you to all of the parents who sent 1 dollar to school so that we could do that special program.

On February 2nd, Mrs. Jennifer Smith came all the way from the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond, Virginia. Mrs. Smith gave us a preview of things we would be learning in our next Social Studies Units. She showed us things about Greek/Roman architecture, pottery, and all sorts of great pictures and film clips. We then worked in groups to be pretend archaelogists. We explored texture and and structure and we learned about natural resources in other countries. Mrs. Smith’s lesson even tied in  with what we had been learning about in Art (mosaics). We will be learning more about Greece and Rome after we complete our Science Unit on Energy.

We just finished our Unit Test on Economics. We have finished the basics but we will be expanding our topics of Economics and natural resources when we study Ancient Civilizations. We unfortunately didn’t get to do all of the fun “Greeneville” projects planned because of the lost time due to the snow. We did play “Who Wants to Be a Millionare” Economics review game prior to the test. On Thursday, February 12th we became “factory employees” and did a “mass production” of homemade valentines for the teachers and staff. Our paper valentines were filled with chocolate kisses and hugs and a paper heart that showed the receiver the products we used and what type of resources were used. The valentines were put into a homemade paper envelope tied with string. The note on the outside said “Here are some sweet ‘goods’ to thank you for your great ’service’”. We then talked about how we were producer of goods by making the cards and a producer of a service by delivering the items to the teachers. Mrs. Greene then gave us some income (our paycheck was a trip to the prize box for a job well done).

Congratulations to all those folks who made an A on the Economics Test!
